Richard, Len, Jeane, Berne, thank you very much for the kind words. I'm glad you found something of value in the post.

My father called today to tell me how much he liked this post, and that he thought his mother (the "grandmother" I am referring to in the title, a woman of great political action, and one I never knew) would have been very proud. Of the post, and of me in general.

Best present ever.

Very thought-provoking essay, Beth. It hit one particular nerve with me which dovetails right along with what you described as rights we shouldn't give away.
I have recently begun working with a spiritual director on certain faith/religion issues. I am exploring the ecumenical/apostolic Catholic Church because I can't let go of my "preferred" mode of ancient traditions of worship and am learning that I don't have to do so. There's a whole community of men and women, including Catholic priests of both genders, who agree with my feeling: it's my birthright and my legacy and the "old boys network" of the institutional church doesn't get to say different.
My other big area to work on this year is to be a better blogger. Good place to start was a visit to Small Dots, I figure.

Spent yesterday afternoon discussing this very subject with a dear friend who was on the front lines of the civil rights movement in Birmingham.
She had interesting insight into how internal politics and greed can change and lose the focus of a movement.
Makes me feel naive and more determined than ever.
Thanks for a great post.

Thanks for turning my thoughts toward a question worth pondering as the new year arrives, Beth. My answer is forming as I write this, and I know what the action steps are.

I hope your course is going well. We're back in Denver after a good stay in Cambridge, full of family holiday doings. Happy New Year!

Thank you for this post, Beth. I really like the idea of each and every one of us picking our own battle to fight.

In the end, it's about what makes each of us passionate.
