What is the most important function of a museum?

The Museum Association put this video up a while ago. Several people were asked “What is the single most important function of museums?”

I would have said “To tell us our own stories, and the stories of others.”

I agree with you, Beth, but would also add that museums expose us to the highest forms of expression about who we are. They open up our perception of what is possible, not just what is or has been.

Isn’t the most important function of a museum to provide the public with education and access to maintained and protected collections
